The Conversation Nobody Wants to Have

JP Johnson, Founder & President

There is one topic in our line of work that is, by far, the most uncomfortable to bring up. It isn’t market volatility. It isn’t taxes. It isn’t even money at all.

It’s the premature death of a spouse.

No one wants to talk about it. Not the families sitting across from us, and honestly, not most of our industry either. It is easier to stay in the comfortable lanes — portfolios, projections, performance — and quietly hope the hard conversation never becomes necessary.

We don’t do that here. And we want you to understand why.

The Topic Most Firms Skip

Here is what gets totally missed by so much of wealth management: the plan that works beautifully while both spouses are living can fall apart completely when one of them is gone.

Often, one spouse has carried the financial relationship. They know where the accounts are, how the income flows, which advisor to call. The other spouse has trusted them to handle it — for thirty or forty years of marriage, that arrangement worked just fine.

Then the unthinkable happens. And in the middle of the deepest grief of their life, the surviving spouse inherits a second full-time job they never trained for. Passwords. Beneficiaries. Pensions with survivor elections that can’t be undone. Social Security decisions with permanent consequences. A tax situation that changes the very next year.

That is a million pieces to pick up. Nobody should have to pick them up alone, unprepared.

While Both of You Are Living

The whole point is timing. This conversation only does its work if it happens while both spouses are here, healthy, and able to make decisions together.

That is why we bring it up early in the retirement years — on purpose, head on — when nothing is wrong. Not because we expect the worst, but because the best time to prepare for a storm is on a clear day. Waiting until it becomes a reality isn’t a plan. It’s a crisis.

We tell our families plainly: this is one of the most loving things you will ever do for each other. Sitting in that discomfort for an hour today can spare the person you love months of confusion and fear later.

What Preparation Actually Looks Like

This isn’t a single grim meeting. It’s structure, built in advance, so the plan holds when life doesn’t.

Both spouses know the full picture. Where every account lives, what it’s for, and who to call — no mysteries, no filing cabinets only one person can navigate. Income that continues without interruption, so the household doesn’t wonder how the bills get paid next month. Beneficiaries, titles, and estate documents that all say the same thing, reviewed and coordinated, not assumed. And a team that already knows your family — so the surviving spouse is never starting from scratch with a stranger.

When that structure exists, the worst day of someone’s life doesn’t also become a financial emergency. They get to grieve. The plan does the rest.

Love Looks Like Preparation

We spend real time with our clients on this, and we will keep doing it, uncomfortable or not. Because the families who weather loss well aren’t the ones who avoided the conversation. They’re the ones who had it early, together, with a team that built for it.

If you and your spouse have never walked through what happens if one of you is gone, have that conversation. And if you want help having it, that’s exactly what we’re here for.
